Site Preparation:
To ensure good seed to soil contact, proper site preparation is critical. Depending on the previous crop/use of the site to be planted, site preparation needs will vary from site to site. If you have questions about the needs of your site, please contact the SWCD.
Sod/Pasture Renovation:
Planting into sod can pose some challenges, however can be just as successful as a prepared crop field. If grass is present, mowing or grazing to shorten the cover will help with seed placement in the furrow. Grasses that are long can be pressed into the soil and create a shield that can prevent the discs from cutting a furrow or proper depth.
Spraying the current cover with herbicides can allow for minimal soil disturbance but allow for seed to have reduced competition for nutrients and sunlight. Herbicides will also reduce weed pressure in the new seeding. Soils in hay fields and in pastures, can be difficult for the openers to cut a furrow under some conditions. Waiting to plant until after a rain or light tillage can help with getting proper seed placement. If you have questions about your site, contact the SWCD to schedule a site visit.
Clean up:
The renter is responsible for cleaning all seed out of the drill boxes. Any seed removed by SWCD staff will be discarded, unless prior arrangements have been made with the District. If a site is planted while it is too wet, soil can build up behind the openers and plug the seed tubes. Check all of the seed cups for all three boxes to ensure there is no seed piling inside the cup, if there is, the seed tube is plugged and will need to be cleaned out. The renter is responsible to clean soil and debris from the openers and seed tubes. Remove blockage from and allow seed to freely flow from the seed box through the drop tube between the openers. If the Drill needs to be cleaned from mud and dirt, or seed tubes are plugged after use, the district may issue a fee of $150 to cover costs to get the drill back in service.
